My First Time Abroad

Cuba is it's own world. Many tourists see Cuba as an impoverished country, but their classic style culture of transportation and living is a must see.

Visiting Havana, the nation's capital and Varadero was a wonderful experience to learn about the Cuban culture, host a children's basketball clinic, and enjoy the sandy white beaches. I was blessed with a wonderful opportunity to spend almost two weeks exploring, learning, and enjoying the many things Cuba has to offer.

My first time out of the country was one for the books. Being able to make a difference by doing the simple things such as giving gifts and teaching the game of basketball. The first few days consisted of hosting a children's clinic and playing against local Cuban teams. While others day we were able to learn about the culture and the uniqueness of their culture. Everyone was friendly and appreciated the little things that I myself take advantage of. I realized that Cubans do not have the same luxury as we do in America, but I find it inspirational how they seemed happier than we do with materialistic things. This was a learning experience for me where I started to appreciate the little things so much more.
The way Cubans maneuvered around their country was one of my favorite things to see. I loved the classic cars that made me feel like I was living in the 1950's. And it was amazing to see that all the cars were from the same era and they were able to keep them running without any issues. Interestingly, the buses were older than the cars.
